RCDS Holds a discussion on Challenges Facing the Expert Community in Armenia

24.01.2024

On January 23, a discussion titled “Challenges Facing the Expert Community in Armenia” took place. Speaker Anna Gevorgyan addressed the trends of devaluation within the expert field, focusing in particular on the blurring of boundaries between engaging in politics and conducting political analysis in Armenia. The discussion also touched upon the issue of projecting political polarization onto expert circles.

Following the presentation, participants exchanged views. It was emphasized that the crisis in expertise is a global phenomenon. In Armenia, as elsewhere, individuals with questionable competence who promote populist or conspiratorial narratives often gain visibility more easily. This is largely due to media outlets’ temptation to provide a platform to such individuals.

It was noted that there are no institutional mechanisms to filter out such "experts." The issue lies primarily in the realm of ethics and the responsibility of editors-in-chief, who must establish and adhere to their own standards of filtering content.
